Frank Tamborello is Executive Director of Hunger Action Los Angeles. Executive Director, Hunger Action Los Angeles. He was born the 6th of 7 children in Houston Texas and spent his childhood in the town of Magnolia. After working as a photolithographer (a now near-extinct trade in its original form) at various printing establishments Frank strayed from the fold to begin a career of organizing activities including: Development Aid from People to People (1990-1992): where he worked with a team of five Americans in Luanda, Angola towards end of first Angolan Civil War, beginning a school for 30 street children (Formigas do Futuro). Returning to Texas Frank was part of ACORN (1992-1993) working in Dallas and Houston to campaign against “redlining” of black and Latino homebuyers. After moving to Los Angeles Frank joined Interfaith Hunger Coalition (1994-1996) where he edited Peoples Guide to Welfare Health and Other Services: created outreach programs for food stamps, summer food program, winter shelter program and other services as well as training members of first AmeriCorps contingent in Los Angeles, all of which led to his becoming well known to many of the giants of the Legal Aid profession in the city of angels.
Frank and a few colleagues founded Hunger Action LA (HALA) to carry on the work in 2006.HALA began the first Market Match program in Los Angeles County, which provides additional fruits and vegetables to those using SNAP at farmers markets. The program currently has 39 participating markets in LA, benefitting tens of thousands of low income consumers as well as over 100 local farmers.
He has conducted trainings for nearly 10,000 people over 12 years on food policy and anti-poverty legislation.
Frank is currently Co-Chair, California Hunger Action Coalition and is on the LA Food Policy Council Leadership Roundtable.
