About me
Dr. Jessie Lowell (they/them or she/her) is a Senior Technology Safety Specialist at Safety Net, the technology safety project of the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). They joined Safety Net as a Technology Safety Specialist in July 2022. They were previously an advocate in the emergency safehome and transitional housing programs at The Network/La Red, a community DV program serving LGBTQ+, polyamorous, and BDSM communities. They were a hotline volunteer there from 2014-2020 and 2022-2023. Jessie volunteered previously with the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center as an advocate/trainer, and Operation: Safe Escape as the open-source intelligence lead and as a digital safety advocate. Since 2018, they have assisted journalists, activists, musicians, community groups, librarians, and more, with security and digital privacy.
Jessie is an International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT). They have a PhD in computer science from Brandeis University, a master's in computer science from Northeastern University, and a bachelor's in brain & cognitive sciences from MIT. They completed a computational epidemiology postdoc at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. The academic computer science experience gave them an understanding of systems and processes, and a general fluency with technology, that have been very helpful.
